I recently dived into the romantic sub-section of Fantasy Romance, and chose this series as my introduction -- I was not disappointed! This series is one that I recommend to anyone who loves fantasy/apocalyptic/romance in any form. The premise of the entire series is simple: the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse have come to earth, causing all electronics to fail instantly. The Horsemen suddenly vanish and one by one appear again on Earth -- causing massive casualties wherever they go due to their belief that humanity is inherently evil and must be judged. Each Horsemen, however, meets 1 woman who changes their views of humanity and in turn plays a small part in saving some of humanity.
Pestilence is the first book in this series, and it really sets the pace for the other 3. Pestilence brings disease and the plague wherever he roams, and Sara (a firefighter) is chosen by the other members of the fire department in a small town to end the death by killing Pestilence. She realizes too late that Pestilence cannot be killed, and is forced to travel the East Coast of the United States with him -- bringing death to every household in every town he passes through. On Amazon, the synopsis explains it best:
"They came to earth-Pestilence, War, Famine, Death-four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.
When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn's town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.
Too bad no one told her Pestilence can't be killed.
Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he's eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she's with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her ... and hers towards him.
And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process."
Sara slowly begins to realize that Pestilence not only cares for her, but does not enjoy the massive destruction he is causing. As the love between them grows, so does his compassion for humanity. By the end of the book, he has a major choice to make: continue to destroy humanity, or stop and spend his days with the woman he has come to love.
I have read MANY romance books in my lifetime, but no series thus far has grabbed me and held on as much as this series has. I have read each book no less than 4 times each, and each time I fall in love with them a little more. The characters are complex, and while each one follows the same basic timeline of events, each one has enough differences from the others to make it unique.
I recommend this series to anyone looking for a new book to read, and have yet to have anyone tell me they did not like them. You can read these for free using Kindle Unlimited, buy them for $14.98 on Amazon (paperback), $13.98 at Barnes & Noble (paperback), or $15.23 on Thriftbooks (paperback).
